Promote your business using social media tools

Promote your business with social media

You would have to live under a rock to not have heard about social media. But there is so much talk about social media that some people don’t even know what it is and why it is so important. So here is a little primer.

What is social media?

Social media is primarily a way to network and build relationships with others. Social networking, as it is called, is just that, networking. Most business professionals are familiar with networking in the traditional sense; Chamber of Commerce gatherings, lunchtime talks, and BNI meetings. The idea behind these is to get to know likeminded people in your local community and promote your business. This is the same idea behind social media; getting to know likeminded people and promote your business. The only difference is that the community is now global instead of local.

Social media is made up of lots of websites that are designed to bring people together through a sharing of dialogue, content, audio, video, and pictures. Some of the most popular websites are Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube.

Why is social media important?

The truth of the matter is that social media is here to stay. Social media has been adopted and become main stream.  Here in Australia you can follow Sunrise via Twitter, Telstra, Billabong, Harvey Norman and many other Australian and multi national companies are starting to use Facebook and Twitter Each day more people and more businesses use social media to connect with one another. If you aren’t in the mix, people aren’t talking about you but about your competition.

How does social media benefit me?

Social media keeps you in front of people who may actually buy what you are selling. If you use the social media tools properly, you can pinpoint your interactions on the sites so that you can get in front of your actual target market. It takes a little bit of work, but social media offers even more benefits.

  • You can get your message out faster than ever before.
You don’t have to wait for anyone to approve your press release or air your commercial. Social media is run in real time and when you push enter to post your information, it is transmitted immediately.
  • There is potential to reach more people.
Once you have submitted your information to the social media sites, others can send your information to their own network and it can spread like wildfire, if it is worthwhile.
  • You can improve your branding.
By engaging your audience with industry knowledge and an expert perspective, you gain their attention and promote your brand in the process. Setting up all of your social media profiles to link to your company’s site will allow other social media users to learn more about you and your company on your own terms.
  • You can better understand and respond to the needs of your target market.
Use some of the free tools available on the internet to set up notifications for your name, your business name, and keywords relevant to your business. This will allow you to keep tabs on what is and what is not being said about you on the social media sites and the internet in general.
