"Follow Me on Twitter" Everyone is saying it these days. Are you?

“Follow me on Twitter!”

It seems that we hear this everywhere we go; our favorite market, discount retail stores, even at church.  Maybe you have a vague idea of what Twitter is but your aren’t sure if it is something that you should spend any of your  time on.  Well, here is all you need to know about Twitter.  And just a bit of advice, if you are just starting a business, Twitter may be your new best friend.

I don’t know what I am supposed to do on Twitter.

Twitter describes itself as, “a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?”  But what does this really mean?  Let me explain it in more simple terms.  Twitter is basically a platform for networking.  Of course you can talk to your mom and your son and your long-lost cousin, but for business owners, Twitter is most valuable when used to broaden your network and sphere of influence.

When you post information to Twitter, you have to make sure that you keep the message to 140 characters or less.  This is pretty easy once you get the hang of it and it forces you to speak more concisely.  That conciseness helps convey your message and increases the chances of your message being read.  It’s only 140 characters, who doesn’t have time for that?  It is within those 140 characters that you share information about you, your business, and your opinions that you begin to make a name for yourself and gain followers.

What types of stuff should I share on Twitter?

Social media has added a personal touch to interactions on the internet.  With all of the pictures and status updates, we get to know others on the internet a little bit.  This is a great quality and it builds trust in those that listen to you.  Therefore, you want to share a little bit about yourself.  Give your followers glimpses into who you are and what your life is like.

Other things to share:

  • What you are doing.
  • Where you are.
  • Interesting quotes.
  • Thoughts.
  • Cool pictures and video.
  • Links to great content on the web.
  • Links to your blog posts or site updates.
  • Your thoughts on other’s tweets

Now that you know more about Twitter, head over there and set up an account.  It is free and can be a goldmine for the patient start-up owner.
